Our journey through life is anything but smooth. There are twists and turns, bumps and  road blocks. More aften than not, when we come across an obstacle in our path, there is a detour. A clearly marked sign saying "this way". Unfortunately, some of the biggest obstacles in life come with no such signs. My husband and I found ourselves facing a road block in 2007. During a routine ultrasound, we were told that something was "wrong" with our unborn son. We were given no indication of what the problem might be, only told to see a perinatologist as soon as possible. The next day we were told our son most likely had Down Syndrome and it was confirmed two weeks later when my amnio results came back from the lab. We did not know anything about Down Syndrome. We had no idea what to do or where to turn. As I'm sure most parents do, we expected someone to give us a map for this detour on our journey. If not a map, then maybe a nudge in the right direction? Reassurance that we were even on the right road? Anything? We recieved two web addresses as we stumbled off towards our new destination. One for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas and one for a personal blog. Not much fuel for the trip we were beginning. Being an almost obsessive researcher, I began scouring the internet desperately searching for the information I needed. I went to site after site looking for medical issues, parent support groups, doctors...the list was endless. I eventually found most of the information I needed and even managed to stumble onto some helpful resources that have made our lives much easier. We found amazing stories from parents just like us that helped us recognize the miracle we were bringing into the world.

Looking back it still amazes me that it was so difficult to find helpful information about Down Syndrome. It was out there, but its a daunting task to scroll through page after page of sites, hoping to find something that will give you the slightest peek into what life will be like with your child. And so this site was born. A compilation of everything I searched so desperately for when I first found out that my beautiful baby boy would arrive with an extra chromosome. A map for you to continue on your journey. Enjoy your detour.
